Texas Border Sector Chief Warns Of Increasing Danger In River Area Where 9 Drank This Week

The chief patrol agent for the Del Rio Sector warned about the increasing dangers in the Rio Grande area near Eagle Pass. The area is seeing heavy rains that are driving currents up in an area of the Rio Grande where 9 migrants were killed in one crossing.

“This warning is of extreme importance. The currents in the Rio Grande are becoming more dangerous because of recent and continued rainfall. More rain is expected for the next week.” Breitbart Texas Chief Patrol Agent Jason D. Owens stated in a statement. “Despite these adverse conditions, U.S. Border Patrol, Del Rio Sector continues to encounter large groups of more than 100+, 200+ attempting to cross the Rio Grande daily.”

Our Riverine agents use the airboat as an essential tool. These boats are extremely maneuverable, and can run in very shallow waters. They provide an alternative method for transportation to our Riverine agents and help us to rescue many people on the Rio Grande. pic.twitter.com/5ZIXzxb5Rg

“Five people have been killed trying to cross the area in recent days,” Owens said. We ask everyone to avoid illegal crossings .”

in an effort to save lives.

Chief Owens referenced an incident from Thursday where a group of more than 50 migrants crossed in a single crossing. Breitbart Texas reported for the first time that many migrants in that group were being swept away into the currents.

Agents found four dead migrants in the river on Thursday afternoon. On Saturday, the number had risen to nine.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers also published Chief Owens’ statement in Spanish:

Despite the increasing dangers of the swiftly moving currents of the Rio Grande, a group of 362 migrants crossed the river in a single group on Saturday morning, Breitbart Texas reported.

The nearly 400 migrants crossed in nearly the same area where this week’s drownings occurred.

More than 52,000 migrants crossed the Rio Grande into the Del Rio Sector in August — making it the busiest sector in the nation for the second month in a row, Breitbart reported.
