Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Asia was a reminder of the relative strength and weakness in America.

When Nancy Pelosi, House Speaker, refused to stop in Taiwan as part of her final tour of Asian capitals in the summer, it ignited the most serious diplomatic dispute between America and China in years.

How did the collision last week turn out for America?

Writes New York Times : Speaker Pelosi’s trip to Taiwan started with her plane departing Kuala Lumpur, heading southeast towards the Indonesian portion of Borneo and then turning north toward fly the eastern part the Philippines. Flying northeast over the South China Sea from Taiwan would be a more direct and shorter route.

Pelosi’s avoidance of the South China Sea might have something to do with China’s claim to 90% of it and China’s control of islets in that sea that Beijing has converted into air, missile and naval bases.

After 19 hours in Taiwan, the speaker flew to South Korea, where her reception was described as “cool.” President Yoon Suk Yeol, though at home in Seoul when Pelosi arrived, did not meet with her, but instead held a 40-minute phone conversation.

South Korea is, just like its neighboring countries, anxious to not offend China.

This anomaly is: South Korea and New Zealand all depend on the United States to be their No. They are their number one ally when defending themselves against China. However, they all boast that China is their no. 1. Trading partner.

How did Beijing react to Pelosi’s 19 hours in Taiwan?

China held live fire exercises at six locations around Taiwan from Thursday noon to Sunday afternoon. Taiwan was blasted by one Chinese missile. Five missiles from China landed in Japan’s exclusive economic zone.

These live firings in and around Taiwan had the effect of a blockade or naval quarantine. Other nations’ ships and planes avoided the air corridors and waterways being attacked by Chinese forces.

China announced economic and diplomatic sanctions against the U.S., Taiwan and cancelled talks with Washington over climate change and military relations.

Pelosi visited Taiwan in the event that sparked the Chinese war games. These air, naval, and missile exercises weren’t planned overnight. These exercises appear to have been performed as a rehearsal of how China plans to bring Taiwan back to its motherland when President Xi Jinping is ready.

Pelosi spent her entire trip insisting on the fact that her visit did not change U.S. policies regarding Taiwan.

Pelosi spoke to journalists in Tokyo and reiterated that “our representation here isn’t about changing the status-quo,” while adding that Beijing “probably uses our visit as an excuse.”

As the live firing went on for 72 hours, the White House echoed Pelosi that the U.S. recognizes Beijing’s claim that Taiwan is a “part of China” and does not contest that claim. Nor have we any intention of shifting U.S. policy on Taiwan as it has been pursued since Jimmy Carter broke U.S. diplomatic relations with Taiwan in 1979.

What was the message and message that China sent to Taiwan in response to Pelosi’s trip?

The message to America was clear from Beijing. China considers Taiwan a separate province. Any power that challenges this political reality, even the United States, will be confronted by China. Any Taiwanese attempt to declare independence from Beijing will be viewed as a casus belli and a reason for war.

The White House didn’t move any missiles or planes in response to the Chinese live fire exercises. In fact, it repeatedly assured Beijing that Pelosi’s visit would not change U.S. policy. policy.

It is difficult to imagine how Asia’s democratic countries and U.S allies Japan and South Korea could have ruled out the conclusion that China’s aggressiveness was just being met with American passiveness. Senator Lindsey Graham, a Hawkish member of the Senate seems to believe this.

It attacked and captured the Himalayan borderlands from India, fortified half of the isles in that ocean, claimed the Taiwan Strait to be territorial waters. Transit of this water by U.S. warships and other allied warships would require China’s consent, and claimed Taiwan and the Senkaku Islands nearby as part of China.

By now it has flown military planes and warships through the Taiwan Strait to and over the waters around Taiwan, and tested missiles and rockets in an effort to assert its claim to that island.

When 21st-century China stakes a claim to something in Asia, it backs up its claim with action. This trend points towards a possible future confrontation with Taiwan.
