Biden calls for a 4.6% raise in federal employee pay

President Biden officially announced his plans to offer civilian federal employees a raise in pay next year. This promise was made during the election and is sure to satisfy government workers who are struggling with high inflation just like all the other voters.

In a letter addressed to Congress, Mr. Biden stated that civilian federal employees would see an average 4.6% increase in their pay starting Jan. 1. This is consistent with the 2023 budget plan he presented in spring.

The raise includes an overall 4.1% increase, and locality-pay that will average 0.5%.

Mr. Biden pointed to a widening pay gap between civilian federal employees and those in the private sector as the reason for this boost. This has led to problems with retention and recruitment within the federal government.

“Federal agency have seen growing recruitment challenges and retention difficulties with Federal positions experiencing erosion compensation,” Mr. Biden stated in a letter that was sent on Wednesday.

“Multiple decades of Federal civil employees receiving lower salaries than required by regular law has resulted in substantial differences in pay between Federal and private employees,” he said.

This 4.6% increase will mark the biggest federal employee pay hike in over 20 years. The same percentage was applied to federal employees in 2002..

Federal workers received 2.7% raises in 2022.

” The American people depend on Federal agencies being managed by competent, skilled, and engaged employees. This requires Federal wages to remain competitive,” said Mr. Biden.
