Two House Investigators asked for a review of and assessment of damage to the boxes containing highly classified information that were seized by FBI agents during a raid on the Mar-a-Lago estate of former President Donald Trump.
Reps. Adam Schiff (chair of the Intelligence Committee) and Carolyn Maloney (chairperson of the Oversight Committee), asked for an urgent review in a letter addressed to Avril Haines, National Intelligence Director, to address national security concerns.
“The conduct of former President Trump has put our national security at serious risk,” lawmakers stated. This issue requires a thorough review in addition to ongoing law enforcement inquiries .”
This request is the first step Congress has taken to get involved in oversight efforts after the Mar-a-Lago raid.
Mr. Trump’s handlings of these documents would pose a national security threat to the nation. Ms. Maloney and Mr. Schiff asked for this information.
The FBI raided Mr. Trump’s house after he was accused of violating the Espionage Act and obstruction of justice. Merrick Garland, Attorney General of Texas, said that he requested the FBI to conduct the search.
One receipt that was accompanied Mr. Trump’s search warrant showed documents marked “TS/SCI,” which indicates the highest level of government classification.
TruthSocial: Mr. Trump attacked the FBI for raiding and accusing former President Barack Obama of having millions of pages classified documents related to nuclear weapons.
Mr. Obama’s documents are held currently by the National Archives and Records Administration and will soon land in his presidential library.
Mr. Trump claimed that all documents in his possession had been declassified.
“Number 1: It was all classified. They didn’t have to “seize” anything. “They could have it whenever they want without having to play politics or break into Mar-a Lago,” Trump stated. It was stored in secure storage with an extra lock added at their request .”
