NY Jewish Group Urges Jewish Students to “Unlearn” Support for Israel

Unbelievable? Nope. No.

A Jewish group from the liberal City University of New York has a plan for Jewish students to learn Zionism , and to disavow support of Israel. Before we continue, here’s a short explanation of Zionism, via the Jewish Visual Library:

The term “Zionism” was coined in 1890 by Nathan Birnbaum. The movement to return the Jewish people back home and for Jewish sovereignty in Israel is its general definition.

Since the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948, Zionism has come to include the movement for the development of the State of Israel and the protection of the Jewish nation in Israel through support for the Israel Defense Forces.

Zionism was founded with both spiritual and tangible goals. Zionism was founded by Jews from all walks of life, including secular, left-leaning, and religious Jews. They worked together to achieve their goals.

There were disagreements over philosophy that led to divisions within the Zionist movement. Over the years, a variety of forms developed. Notable: Political Zionism, Religious Zionism, Socialist Zionism, Territorial Zionism.

Zionism is now a “4 letter” word. It has been liberally used in pro-Palestinian and anti-Israeli activist.

As reported by Jewish News Syndicate, “Not In Our Name: an anti-Zionist Jewish Coalition at CUNY” (NIONCUNY) also plans to get Jewish students to create “their own Jewish identity” in solidarity with Palestinian liberation activists, and the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement (BDS Movement).

Translation: To “unlearn” about your ancestral homeland, you must buy lies and propaganda from a group of people, who in different iterations said they would not stop until Israel, which is the only democracy in the most hazardous region in the globe, “pushed into the ocean” — those same people that support terrorist organizations who fire rockets in any direction into Israeli neighborhoods, without provocation.

NIONCUNY decried Zionism in the university system, and challenged the relationship of Zionism and Judaism — which is contrary to many Jews’ views including those here in America. It also “wholeheartedly” endorsed the BDS movement, according to a statement.

We strongly oppose the Zionist movement in CUNY, which aims to criminalize or demonize Palestinian workers and students.

We also oppose liberal Zionist organizations that claim to be anti-Zionist and apologise for Israeli settler colonial rule.

The notion that such propaganda is vigorously supported Jews by a people who for decades have lived and died trying to destroy Israel, remains almost incomprehensible. Even in our world today where wrong becomes right and right becomes wrong.

What should we be expecting?

The NIONCUNY statement goes on:

Palestinian voices are at the core of our coalition and we stand to uphold their demands for global liberation, resistance by any means necessary, the right of return for Palestinian refugees, the return of all land prior to 1948, and ending the occupation. We pledge to Palestinian liberation, as it is defined by the Palestinians. These principles cannot be compromised.

We strongly oppose the Zionist movement in CUNY which aims to demonize and criminalize Palestinian workers and students. We also oppose liberal Zionist organizations that claim to be anti-Zionist and thereby apologise for Israeli colonial rule.

[…]

As proud Jewish citizens, we reject any attempt to link Zionism with Judaism and Jewish life. We define Zionism as a 150-year-old political ideology built with inspiration from European colonialism, ethnic nationalism, and white supremacy since its conception.

[Zionism] refers to an ideology which continues to justify and encourage acts of genocide, ethnic cleansing and murder against the Palestinian people. It also targets allies of Palestinians around the world. This is all supported by the United States imperialism.

Jeffrey Lax is an Orthodox Jewish professor of business at CUNY’s Kingsborough Community College. He told JNS NIONCUNY was small but represents a dangerous trend.

I am confident that the group doesn’t represent the vast majority of Jewish people in CUNY and around the world. However, I worry because of the loud, radical, militant views that have caused so many problems.

The bottom line:

History has shown us that even small groups of militants who go unchallenged eventually commit horrible enough evils that shock an entire country into action. Now the question is, was it too late or in time?

Let’s hope that we don’t end up in an impasse with any revolutionary movement that threatens America, as it is now; and on a greater scale might threaten the balance in world power.

Joe Biden may say that groups that do “eat their lunch .”
