N.D. Governor pushes for bill to guarantee Pledge of Allegiance in schools and gov’t meetings

North Dakota Governor. Doug Burgum stated that he wants the North Dakota Legislature to ensure the right to recite The Pledge of Allegiance at public schools and in government meetings.

The Republican governor made the announcement after Fargo School Board voted this month not to recite the pledge during its meetings.

“America, the land of opportunities. M. Burgum stated Monday that students from every North Dakota public school, as well as elected governing bodies, and all those present at their meetings, should be able to recite and support the American ideals on which the country was founded. Our administration has created a legislative framework to ensure that students in North Dakota have the chance to recite Pledge of Allegiance just as other states have done .”

.

The governor stated that he had enlisted three state legislators — Senator Scott Meyer from Grand Forks, Rep. Pat Heinert in Bismarck and Todd Porter out of Manda — for the creation of the legislation.

They are now putting the pledge front and center after Fargo School Board voted 7-2 Aug. 9, to discontinue reciting it.

Board member Seth Holden stated that the reference to “under God”, in the pledge, was to Christ and did not include other religions. According to The Center Square publication from North Dakota, the pledge is a “noninclusionary act.”

” We are one nation, under many gods,” said Mr. Holden during the meeting.

He said that the portion of the pledge that stated the U.S. was “one nation, indivisible with liberty & justice for all” wasn’t true.

Most states require that the Pledge to Allegiance be recited in schools. However, they allow for exemptions for teachers and students who don’t wish to.

The Supreme Court decided in the 1943 West Virginia case that the government can’t force someone to say the pledge or salute the flag in public schools.
