FDA approves the sale of hearing aids over-the-counter

On Tuesday, President Biden praised a final rule by the Food and Drug Administration which will allow hearing aids to be purchased without prescription. This move is likely to reduce costs and save consumers money.

Last year, Mr. Biden pushed for new store-based hearing aids. These devices don’t need a doctor’s appointment or to be fitted by a specialist. Biden stated that nearly 40million Americans suffer from hearing loss, but are often unable to afford these devices.

” Americans can now buy more affordable hearing aids at a pharmacy or store across the nation as early as October,” Mr. Biden stated.

He stated that the changes could bring as high as $3 ,000 savings to families looking for hearing aids.

This move implements Over-the-Counter Hearing Aid Act. It was part of an FDA Reauthorization Bill passed during Trump’s administration in 2017..

Mr. Biden demanded that he be given a time frame for his actions as part of an executive order to boost competition across a range of industries.

“This is the most recent action that we have taken to improve our economy’s competitiveness and reduce concentration. American consumers are more expensive when too many companies control the market,” said Mr. Biden Tuesday. We are finally creating an economy that is sustainable for all working families .”

One in three Americans aged 65 through 75 has trouble hearing. Half of all Americans over 75 don’t have hearing loss. However, hearing aids are often not covered by Medicare or private insurance.
