Derwin James was drafted 17th overall in the 2018 NFL draft, and he hasn’t looked back since then, when healthy. In 2019, James missed 11 games and the entire 2020 season due to a torn meniscus. Throughout his career, thus far, James has 257 tackles, 5.5 sacks, five interceptions, and three forced fumbles in his career.

Following the signing, ESPN reports that he told reporters :

” I feel amazing… It was clear in my mind that the deal would be done. I just tried to do what I could as a player to come out here every day and get better in the ways that I could.”

James and the team agreed to terms, one day after coach Brandon Staley praised the all-around safety.
Staley stated that James had “earned every penny” of the new deal and added:

“This wasn’t like every other big contract that gets signed, because you know what he had to go through in order to make it to this point in his career … He overcame a lot to earn this contract.”

James described receiving praise from his coach as “a privilege,” noting that it reminds of him to “be humble”:

“That’s a privilege to me for people to be able to think of you like that. That is a huge weight that I carry. We have to continue improving and staying humble. Don’t get arrogant, just keep working and staying humble.”

The Chargers signed J.C. Jackson as a cornerback and Sebastian Joseph-Day and Austin Johnson respectively, defensive linemen.

The Chargers’ defense could be the best in the NFL. They have many top-notch defensive players and everyone seems determined to win a Super Bowl title.

The AFC West division will be the most competitive in the league and all four of its teams, the Los Angeles Chargers (Los Angeles Chargers), Kansas City Chiefs (Los Vegas Raiders) and Denver Broncos (League), could reach the playoffs.

The Chargers will open Week 1 at SoFi Stadium, against the divisional rival Las Vegas Raiders.
