The LA Times urges Biden to declare a “Climate Emergency”

You’d think that Leftists, Democrats, and the global warming crowd would be celebrating the Senate passage of the ludicrously named “Inflation Reduction Act,” which as we’ve discussed at RedState will probably increase inflation and will fund 87,000 new IRS agents just to hassle you.

But instead of celebrating, others are asking for more. Los Angeles Times, once a great newspaper, is asking President Joe Biden for a declaration of a climate emergency. He should also use his executive power and regulator shenanigans in order to move away from fossil fuels. Predictably, they don’t say, switch to what exactly.

Note: We are currently under both a monkeypox and an interminable COVID health emergency. It almost makes it impossible to get up in the morning ..

As Bono sings in U2’s classic, With or Without You, “you give it all, but I want more.” The LA Times editorial board agrees, writing in a Friday opinion piece:

With congressional action now looking more likely [the Inflation Reduction Act], will Biden’s promise to confront the climate crisis with presidential proclamations, executive orders and regulatory power go unfulfilled?…

Let’s not forget …

The threat is now so serious that it’s imperative we have Biden fulfill his promise. This means he must use every legal executive and administrative power he has to help protect Americans against climate-fueled catastrophes and boost renewable energy. Declaring a national emergency will allow him to access additional resources and tools.

Not sure that this kind of leadership is what the Founders thought when they created the Constitution. I believe that there was a legislative body that would enact laws and an executive branch to enforce them.

Does it seem like the world is a banana republic to you? A politicized justice system conducts dawn raids against elderly process crime opponents, an IRS that used to target conservative organizations, is getting more funding and a pliant press that cheers for the Democrat Party. The president openly states that if Congress does not enact his bills, he will simply apply his will elsewhere.

Democrats spent four years telling Americans that Donald Trump is a fascist dictator. But he has never spoken like this and has not acted as dictatorial in any way as Biden. The LA Times believes that Biden should act as though we were at war.

More important than the symbolic power of a presidential proclamation is whether Biden uses that emergency status to marshal new resources and effect real change…

An emergency declaration, for instance, could unlock additional funding for climate resilience projects by the Pentagon, which has long identified climate change as a threat to national security. The Stafford Act governs disaster relief and preparedness. Biden could order the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to create climate-ready infrastructure for low-income communities of color who are most affected by natural disasters. The president could use his executive authority to accelerate renewable energy projects and manufacturing of electric vehicles and appliances, or go bolder and use it to restore a ban on crude oil exports and stop investment in fossil fuel projects abroad.

Government orders are more effective than gaining votes. These people are saying that even though voters may not support the Green New Deal, they will still issue executive orders .”

.

I believe the LA Times openly urges the president to do exactly the same things that they are so afraid of during the Trump era. Ignore the Constitution and assume power you don’t possess, then rule without regard to the will of the people. The Times has lost credibility like many other newspapers in our country due to its biased reporting. But this is an opportunity for them to make a comeback.
