In our time, we do not have an all-powerful state forcing this on us. Soft totalitarianism is when the media, academia and corporate America practice Newspeak, and force the rest to doublethink. Men can have periods. To call the woman in front of your is “he.” Inclusion and diversity means that you exclude those who oppose ideological homogenity. To achieve an ideologically right result, equity means that you treat people unequally regardless of their achievements and skills.

Many Christians will see through these lies today but will choose not to speak up. According to Milosz, their silence won’t save them but will only corrode them.

People who took the Pill of MurtiBing stopped worrying about their lives, even when everything was falling apart. The Eastern army surrendered happy to the Eastern army, and its soldiers were relieved to find relief from internal tensions and struggles.

But the peace did not last. “But since they could not rid themselves completely of their former personalities,” writes Milosz, “they becameschizophrenics.”

What do you do when the Pill of Murti-Bing stops working and you find yourself living under a dictatorship of official lies in which anyone who contradicts the party line goes to jail?

You become an actor. The practice of ketman is taught to you. The Persian term for the practice that enables you to maintain an outer appearance of Islamic orthodoxy, while being inwardly dissident. Ketman was the only strategy that anyone who didn’t believe in communism could use to avoid trouble. This is mental self defense.

What’s the difference between “ketman” and just plain hypocrisy? Milosz says that being “on” constantly changes one’s character. A actor who plays his part around the clock becomes the role he portrays. Ketman, which is worse than hypocrisy because it corrupts both your character and society at large, makes you look bad.

Milosz has identified eight types of ketman in communism. The “professional ketman” example is one where you believe it’s OK to lie at work because this’s how you must live in order to be able to do great work. Metaphysical ketman is the most serious form of this strategy. It is a way to defend against “total degradation.” Metaphysical ketman was committed by Christians who worked with communist regimes. Milosz says that it is the supreme victory of the Big Lie on the soul. Conservative Christians and conservative Christians are forced to learn ketman under the prevailing tyranny called wokeness. The most deceived people are the ones who believe they can be honest within woke systems. They conform to their beliefs and learn how to adjust them to new orders. Milosz said, “They deceive the devil that thinks they are swindling.” The devil is able to see what they are thinking and can satisfy them.
