A Pakistani immigrant pleaded guilty to planning a terrorist attack on the Islamic State of (ISIS), in Queens, New York City.
Pakistani-born Awais Chudhary, 22 years old, pleaded guilty in federal court to providing material support to ISIS.
Chudhary, an immigrant hailing from Pakistan, was granted naturalization American citizenship. This is likely due to “chain migration”, where naturalized citizens are allowed to bring unlimited foreign relatives with them on green cards.
According to prosecutors, in August 2019, Chudhary plotted to carry out a knife attack on American citizens at a Dunkin’ Donuts near his parents’ home in the East Elmhurst neighborhood of Queens.
In one case, Chudhary investigated where to most effectively stab the body in order to cause the greatest harm.
Chudhary allegedly also plotted to attack specific locations with “bucket bombs”, dropping them on bridges above Grand Central Parkway or the Flushing Bay Promenade. Chudhary would have dropped bombs on traffic.
Prosecutors claimed that Chudhary had mapped out the areas he wanted to target and ordered tactical gear to include a knife, a body harness for holding a cell phone so that he could stream live the attack on social media.
Chudhary faces up to 20 years in prison.
