Feel-Good Friday: Local artist creates a “Mural of Memories” for her mom and honors the community she calls home

Perrysburg is an Ohio suburb, situated along the Maumee River just above Lake Erie. It must be an idyllic place to call home, with energizing views and a vibrant community. With a population of a little more than 25,000 residents, opportunities to dive into community abound.

Artist Abigail Bruce-Hamilton loves this community and loves to give back to it. She created sidewalk artwork to help people feel better during the pandemic.

“During the pandemic I did free chalk art for those who couldn’t do birthday parties or were just feeling down and depressed.”

That takes an incredible heart, and from the video here, reflects incredible talent. This makes her an excellent candidate for Feel-Good Friday.

According to Bruce-Hamilton’s website,

She was raised with a passion for the arts, which began in music as a child. This love blossomed into the art it is today.

She is a self-taught painter and her favourite mediums are acrylics, oils or watercolors, chalk art, jewellery making, and other hand-made crafts.

She is passionate about bringing joy and happiness to all people, and she hopes to create permanent murals one day!

Bruce Hamilton decided to begin with her backyard and want to share it all with everyone who passes by.

WTOL 11 in Toledo interviewed her about the creative process.

A Perrysburg artist used her paintbrush to transform her back yard fence. Not only did she want to make it look better, but also to share the experience with others.

Abigail Bruce Hamilton painted a mural with red poppies and yellow jacket bees on her fence that faced Eckel Junction Road.

Bruce Hamilton’s mother died in June. She wanted to remember her with a flower.

“Poppies seemed like a better sentiment, as like a tribute not just to my mother, but to other people lost.”

Bruce Hamilton first called the Perrysburg Planning and Zoning Division in order to confirm that it was legal. It is a reflection of her integrity and care for her environment. The division granted her permission to work because it was beautification and not commercial. Bruce-Hamilton received nothing but praises and support for the labor of her love.

Bruce Hamilton’s sons were also an inspiration.

” My hope is that they will be able to smile and say “My mom did that!” “

My mother did it.

The final two stanzas from John Keats’ poem, Ode on a Grecian Urn encapsulate the spirit Bruce-Hamilton’s artwork:

‘Beauty is truth, truth beauty,–that is all
Ye know on earth, and all ye need to know.’

Keats speaks eloquently about the beauty of works and how they embody truth. Each viewing brings out more. This art is a gift for the world just like Abigail Bruce Hamilton is a gift for Perrysburg, OH.
