Google Triggers Criminal Investigation After Dad Takes Photos Of His Toddler, Naked, For Doctor

Google led to a criminal investigation that resulted in the expulsion of a suspect from his accounts. The man was accused of sending photos to his child’s doctor, which he flagged as possible child pornography. According to The New York Times.

The tech company initially flagged the images when they were automatically uploaded to Google servers from the father’s phone, according to the NYT. Police concluded that he had not committed any crime after a thorough investigation into his Google account. This included search history and location history as well as photos.

“I knew that these companies were watching and that privacy is not what we would hope it to be,” Mark, who happens to be a software engineer who had worked on a tech company’s tool for flagging problematic content, told the NYT. According to the NYT, a similar situation occurred for Cassio (a father) who, at the request of a pediatrician was flagged by Google’s software. After being uploaded automatically to Google servers, those photos also trigger a scan and Google locks Cassio from his accounts while he is trying to buy a house.
