New York City offers $6 million to support immigrants in times of flux

The Immigrant Affairs Office has just announced that a multimillion dollar package will be available to aid asylum seekers.

In total, $6.8 million will be granted by the Immigrant Affairs Office. 75 million worth of contracts to non-profit organizations for “case management and other critical services” in support of asylum seekers, the office said in an Aug. 14 on Twitter. It doesn’t specify a requirement to distinguish legitimate asylum seekers and illegal immigrants. According to the office, the city will award the contract to the one non-profit organization that makes the best offer.

Organizations will be judged on three criteria–experience, proposed approach, and organizational capability/ability to mobilize immediately.

The selected entity will perform service operations and case management services at one NYC Asylum Seeker Service Navigation Center and five to 10 citywide satellite sites. This organization will manage volunteer recruitment, client flow, case management, public education, supply bag distribution, as well as providing goods and services to the city’s satellite sites.

The multimillion-dollar spending package is coming at a moment when New York City has seen a large influx of legal asylum seekers and illegal immigrants. Texas Governor Greg Abbott sent buses full with migrants to New York City. NYC acts as a sanctuary for illegal immigrants and protects them from deportation by Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Abbott blams President Joe Biden for failing to recognize the crisis in immigration following his open border policy. He was forced to take migrants to NYC to protect Texan communities.

“New York City can be the perfect destination for migrants who will enjoy the many city services and housing the Mayor Eric Adams boasts about in the sanctuary city,” Abbott stated in an August 5 press statement ..

” I hope that he keeps his word to welcome all migrants with open arms, so our overwhelmed border towns can get relief .”

Illegal Alien Influx

During an Aug. 9 testimony at an emergency City Council hearing, NYC Department of Social Services Commissioner Gary Jenkins said that the city had opened 11 hotels to accommodate the recent influx of immigrants.

The city began to experience an increase in immigrants starting in May. For the next three months, the city saw more than 4,000 immigrants arrive. By Aug. 9, there were around 17,000 people in the city’s emergency shelter system, including 8,800 children.

A recent report by the Immigration Reform Law Institute (IRLI) ranked New York City as America’s “Most Dangerous Sanctuary Community,” up from second place in 2019.

In a statement, Dale L. Wilcox, IRLI executive director and general counsel, blamed “incredibly poor leadership” for communities that have earned their place on the list.

“Data clearly shows that sanctuary policies are a catalyst for more crime, fear and death. These leaders should be held accountable for all the harm they caused. He said that their residents deserve much better.
