Maryland’s statewide candidate speaks at county conference

OCEAN CITY, Md. (AP) — On Saturday, candidates for Maryland statewide office addressed a conference hosted by the Maryland Association of Counties in Ocean City. They pledged to collaborate with local leaders.

The Baltimore Sun reported that topics covered included public health emergencies management, body camera footage of police officers and tax collection.

Democratic nominee for governor Wes Moore was not present because he claimed he had a scheduling issue. He is the only candidate from the major parties to be elected as attorney general, governor and comptroller. Moore was present at previous conferences.

Del. The elected leaders were also informed by Cox that Moore is the only candidate to be governor with experience in the elected sector.

Cox is a conservative Republican who was endorsed by President Donald Trump. He stressed local control. When asked about emergency response, Cox stated that he would “reconstruct” the code and “modernize” emergency management laws in order to limit executive power and give more power to local governments.

The forum gave the candidates for attorney general – Democratic U.S. Rep. Anthony Brown, former Republican Anne Arundel Country Councilman Michael Peroutka and for comptroller Democratic Del. Brooke Lierman, Republican Harford County Executive Barry Glassman will appear together as nominees for their respective parties’ voters.

Peroutka, just like Cox has focused his campaign on the message of constitutionality in the anti-pandemic measure.

” These things were illegal. It does not matter what your opinion is of science. Peroutka stated that even though you think – personally, I don’t think much about the science – it doesn’t matter what you believe.

Brown, though he did not mention Peroutka specifically, presented himself as the moderate candidate.

Brown stated that

“Marylanders would like us to rule in the middle.” They want to see common ground and to reach consensus. Marylanders reject extreme governance. As they always have. Extremely to the left or extreme to your right

Glassman, Lierman said that they will work closely together with county leaders in order to share information on income taxes which will enable them to better predict future revenue.

Glassman stated that his experience in local government has made him better qualified to understand the needs of counties. He stressed that he will keep the office “nonpartisan .”

” in the face of a state election where he will need to win some independent and Democratic voters.

” We deserve somebody that isn’t going to work for certain interests, some parties but stands up and be an independent comptroller, for everyone,” Glassman said, who was a Harford County executive and former legislator.

Lierman stated that she would like to be a countroller who “accepts creative ideas.” She also spoke about her initiatives to improve the Maryland Board of Revenue Estimates website, and how her plans to make the procurement process more transparent for the Board of Public Works.

” “It is our time to be bold in Maryland and do better,” stated Lierman who is a Baltimore-based delegate for two terms.

Moore said Friday night to reporters at the conference that he is “very much looking forward” to a debate with Cox.

” When people have the opportunity to listen to us both articulate our very different visions of the state and the direction it is going, I believe more people will get to understand our positions and be open to hearing them,” Moore stated.
