DOJ Press Release on Boston Children’s Hospital: Four times, child sexuality changes zero

The Department of Justice issued a statement on Wednesday denouncing alleged threats against Boston Children’s Hospital staff and patients following the controversy surrounding its sex-change procedures for minors.

Boston Children’s Hospital was under attack after prominent Twitter accounts posted videos promoting sex-change procedures for minors. said that it had received threats. The DOJ statement on the incident used the word “hate” four times to suggest the alleged threats against the hospital were potential hate crimes, but avoided mentioning sex changes by using a euphemism about supporting children’s authenticity.

Children should have the opportunity to grow and thrive as they are. Rachael Rollins, Massachusetts U.S. attorney stated that parents/guardians as well as health care professionals who help them on this journey must be free from harassment and threats. While free speech is a cornerstone of this great country, threats, intimidation, and fear are unacceptable. It concluded that it would not stand by while hate-based crime activity continues in the District. Rollins denounced the threats as “disturbing” and pointed out a previous statement by Attorney General Merrick Garland, in which he pledged his support for hate crime prevention. Rollins stated that she created a special unit to investigate and prosecute civil rights violations, and that the DOJ would guarantee transgender individuals equal protection.

Twitter users shared videos of BCH staff promoting puberty blockers for children, mastectomies for girls as young as 15 and various genital surgeries the hospital offers, most of which have since been removed from YouTube. They also drew attention to BCH guidance which said the hospital offered vaginoplasty at as young as 17 and didn’t list a minimum age requirement for “gender-affirming” hysterectomies; those guidance pages have since been updated following public backlash with age requirements set at 18, although the minimum age for mastectomies is still 15.
