Bibliography and Anne Frank’s illustrated Diary taken from the suburban Dallas school library

A suburban Dallas school district took copies of the Bible, a graphic novel edition of Anne Frank’s Diary and other books one day before classes started.

The books were challenged by their parents from Keller (a suburb of Dallas).

“Anne Frank’s Diary: A Graphic Adaptation” illustrates the bestselling book by a Dutch Jewish young girl. She wrote it as a diary to protect her family from Nazi occupation forces. After the Franks were taken prisoner and placed in concentration camps, Anne Frank and Margot, both of whom died from typhus at Bergen-Belsen, ended the story. After the war, Otto, her father, survived the capture and released the diary that had been kept secret by his secretary.

Several of the listed books by Keller Independent School District are challenging and deal with LGBTQ topics, including “Keeping You A Secret” (Julie Anne Peters), “If You Could Be Mine” (Sara Farizan) and “All Boys Aren’t Blue” by George M. Johnson.

The district’s website didn’t provide any details about the parent challenges and Peters and Farizan books weren’t listed as being out of circulation. According to the website, Johnson books were allowed in library and high school classrooms.

However the curriculum chief of the district listed more than thirty titles that were to be removed from schools shelves immediately by Farizan, Johnson and Peters.

“Attached” is a list containing all books that were challenged in the last year, wrote Jennifer Price (executive director for curriculum and instruction at the district) via an email, obtained from a parent, and shared to Twitter. All books must be removed from classrooms and libraries by today’s end. These books should be collected and stored in a .”

location.

Ms. Price sent an email in which she apologized for “the late request”, but asked principals to send her a confirmation once volumes are removed from the shelves. She wrote, “We must ensure that this action is taken before the end of today.”

Laney Hawes (who describes herself as a parent and served on the parental reviewing committee that approved Anne Frank’s graphic novel), wrote These books were subject to the district-established challenge committee process. Our extremist Christian nationist school board ruled that the entire process was fraudulent because all the books passed the committee process. (2020 election)”

She added: “The person who challenged the book didn’t even show up to defend their position. Now the book is pulled .”

The Keller Independent School District stated that its trustee board approved guidelines on August 8 regarding “instructional material and library books” and that books taken from schools were challenged during the previous year.

If the books meet the guidelines, according to the statement, they will be “returned to libraries” once their conformance is verified.
