A group of people exploring Perry County’s Tom Moore Cave System in Missouri recently discovered something surprising in the dark.

Gerry Keene was exploring with fellow cavers, several of whom were children, when the group came across a dog who appeared to have lost all hope, the Standard Democrat reported Friday.

“She was in pitch black and the baby would not move at all for the first few minutes,” Keene said. After she was in sunlight for a while, her energy started to increase .”

Video footage showed explorers inside Tom Moore cave as they climbed over the rocks in the darkness with lights attached to their helmets:

Keene offered to help more and, once back on the surface of the water, began to search for the owner at nearby houses.

When he returned to the entrance of the cave, he met Rick Haley from the Cave Research Foundation who was there to help.

Another man by the name of Jeff Bohner arrived at the scene after hearing that someone had lost his pet. The moment Keene showed him a photo of the dog, Bohner knew it was 13-year-old Abby.

The canine disappeared almost two months before.

Keene, Haley entered the cave again. Haley observed that it was hard to get in because of the tight spaces.

In a social media post on August 6, Haley shared pictures of the rescue showing the dog zipped safely into a duffel bag ready to be carried out of the cave:

According to Haley the cave was sometimes flooded and had been ravaged by heavy rains. He thought Abby was caught in the water.

Bohner was thrilled to see Abby after the rescue and was grateful for those who helped him find his companion.

“Abby has been doing well, Bohner stated. He added that it seemed she would be fine.
