Abortion Radicalism in Corporate America

Eli Lilly’s willingness to throw away almost 150 years of history, and replace or force large swaths of their workforce to move in the name of making sure women can kill their unborn child in the womb is a testament to the corporate sector’s left-wing radicalism.

Hooper state, Indiana has put more restrictions on abortions and Eli Lilly and Co. are reportedly looking to leave the country.

“Lilly recognizes that abortion is a divisive and deeply personal issue with no clear consensus among the citizens of Indiana,” the company said in a statement Saturday. “Despite the lack of consensus, Indiana chose to adopt quickly one of the strictest anti-abortion laws within the United States .”

Given Eli Lilly’s statement, you might think Indiana’s new abortion ban would be one of the toughest in the country, in line with other states like South Carolina, which is considering a near-total ban with exceptions only if the life of the mother is in danger. But Indiana’s new abortion ban that’s slated to take effect on Sept. 15 only restricts abortions after ten weeks. The law allows for carve-outs that protect the mother’s life and still permits abortions in cases of incest and rape. However, the Indiana legislature decided to not move forward with a provision that required women who have abortions in violation of the rape or incest exclusions to sign an affidavit notarizing their claims.

Indiana’s pro-life law will also mandate that all abortions must be done in hospitals and outpatient centers own by hospitals. This means that clinics operating abortions may lose their licenses, but they can be forced to leave the state. Physicians who do illegal abortions and fail to report the procedure properly will lose their medical licenses.

” We are worried that the law will limit Lilly’s (and Indiana’s) ability to recruit diverse business, scientific and engineering talent around the globe,” Eli Lilly stated. We have increased our coverage for employee health plans to cover travel for reproduction services that are not available locally. However, this may not be sufficient for all current or potential employees. “

Read it again and allow the words to sink in. Openly, one of the largest corporations in the world has pledged to bypass the abortion laws in her home state and to pay women to travel to other countries to have abortions. This is all in order to ensure that unborn babies are not killed again.

Eli Lilly is known for his zealous pursuit of children. In one of the largest settlements in pharmaceutical-industry history, Eli Lilly had to pay out $1. 42 billion after it pleaded guilty to pushing Zyprexa, an antipsychotic, for off-label uses in children and elderly dementia patients in 2009.

Eli Lilly is the second- or third-largest employer in Indianapolis with 10,400 employees working out of its headquarters there.

“As a global company headquartered in Indianapolis for more than 145 years, we work hard to retain and attract thousands of people who are important drivers of our state’s economy. According to Eli Lilly’s statement, this law will force us to plan for greater employment growth in other states.

To a degree, Eli Lilly has been shifting away from Indianapolis (its conservative state) in favor of California’s blue coasts for some time. There are three research and development units of the pharmaceutical giant in New York City: San Francisco, San Diego, and San Francisco. It also recently announced a $700 million building project for a genetic-medicine facility in Boston. Nevertheless, Eli Lilly’s willingness to throw away almost 150 years of history, and replace or force large swaths of their workforce to move in the name of making sure women can kill their unborn child in the womb is a testament to the corporate sector’s left-wing radicalism.

For far too long the conservative movement was baffled by corporate America’s eagerness to join hands with liberals. Conservatives believed that liberals would like to increase taxes and regulate their economy. What could possibly make corporate America agree to this? Conservatives initially thought that it was an absurdity. First, conservatives began to speak of betrayal. For a time, however, conservatives were unable to speak out in a strong enough way that they could say these institutions had been taken over by millennials at the lowest levels.

There’s some truth in the “hijacked” narrative. The alliance between capital and liberals is far more important. Liberalism encourages the pursuit of an unbounded self and breaks down the bonds that tie people to places or individuals. Liberalism must be redefined to include the non-binding contract that an individual creates for his or her marriage, family, community and nation.

But man, Plato reminds, “a being in quest of meaning.” Purging these institutions does not remove our natural urge to seek it. If life are but a collection of self-contained nugatory agreements, what is left to give meaning?

In these situations, capitalism offers a solution. Capitalism is the answer to these circumstances.

Corporate America supports abortion not just to protect its bottom line. Both liberalism and capitalism can be allies as they seek to remove the person from their natural limitations. The former via rights while the latter is based on the pursuit of profits.

It’s no surprise that Eli Lilly received some support from The Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce. According to a statement by the chamber, “The Indiana General Assembly debated an important policy change regarding abortion over the past two weeks.” Hoosiers are at best hurt by an expedited legislative process, which aims to move state policy across broad and complex topics in a hurry. At worst it is reckless. “

This doesn’t mean conservatives should not care about fair and free markets. This recognition is that markets and the rights we have while they are being used by us, serve as intermediate ends towards a greater social good, which is the flourishing of our society. Babies, dare i say it, are crucial to this mission.
