Biden names Monica Bertagnolli director of the National Cancer Institute

President Biden stated Wednesday that he will appoint Dr. Monica Bertagnolli as the 16th Director of the National Cancer Institute. Bertagnolli is a well-respected surgeon and Harvard Medical School Professor.

Dr. Bertagnolli, the new institute’s first female director, will take over Mr. Biden’s cancer “moonshot” program to accelerate the country’s decline in cancer rates. This is a plan to reduce the U.S. death rate by at most 50% percent within the next 25 year.

The National Cancer Institute, which is part of National Institutes of Health, coordinates efforts in order to treat, prevent and diagnose cancer.

Currently, Dr. Bertagnolli works at Brigham and Women’s Hospital as a surgeon and professor of surgery.

She also belongs to the Gastrointestinal Cancer Center and Sarcoma Treatment Center at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. This is a top-ranked cancer hospital.

The administration thanked the doctor for his efforts to incorporate patient input into cancer care, especially in remote and rural communities.

” I look forward to working alongside Dr. Bertagnolli in order to promote the President’s call for ending cancer as we know,” Heath and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra stated. “Dr. “Dr.

Mr. Biden made his announcement Wednesday, before signing the Promises to Address Comprehensive Toxics Act (PACT Act) 2022,. This Act expands healthcare and benefits for veterans who have been exposed to toxic chemicals and fights illnesses like cancer.

The research into cancer is personal to Mr. Biden. His son Beau died of an aggressive form 2015. brain tumor.
