Los Angeles City Council Proposes to Open Hotel Rooms For the Homeless

The Los Angeles City Council is looking to adopt legislation that will allow homeless persons access to vacant hotels. Every Los Angeles hotel will have to report any vacancies if the legislation is passed.

” Each hotel must inform the Department, or its designee in the form prescribed by the Department, at 2 p.m. every day, the availability of rooms at their hotel for the night .”

This is the wrong strategy by Los Angeles City Council. Some families were left without a job, could not afford rent and had to move in order to survive. Families and individuals that aren’t addicted, mentally ill or have children need to be protected.

However those suffering from an addiction, regardless of whether they are addicted to drugs or alcohol, as well as those who have mental illnesses, need to be treated differently. Los Angeles and California, under governors Jerry Brown and Gavin Newsom and Mayor Eric Garcetti have been failing to address the issue of homelessness for many years. The main causes of homelessness are addiction, mental illness and the fentanyl epidemic. Leaders must end the flow of fentanyl into America. They must also hire mental health workers and create more rehabilitation centers. While they are funding shelters for the homeless, they should fund missions that will help them.

Los Angeles needs to follow the same path as Helping up Mission Baltimore. The mission featured former homeless women who were able to work at the center after completing the rehabilitation program.

Drugs and other substance abuse problems are devastating the unhoused in Los Angeles. My plan is to combat illicit drug production and to provide assistance to the most vulnerable. Thomas Franklin, who is a night auditor at the Beverly Hills Marriot in West Los Angeles, was homeless 10 years ago, and he described a “chaotic” experience while living in a transitional housing program. The program had 24-hour staff and security on hand. The city council member was informed by him:

“With the drug use, the fighting, it was impossible to have the support we needed to make the program a success .”

Mina Dahya owns a hotel in Hollywood; she is against this proposal.

” I am kind to the homeless. They are my priority. My staff and I may not be able to handle the situation where I host a voucher guest .

Hotel manager Juan Martinez opposed the proposal, as well, saying:

” This is a terrible idea. It is not safe for people. This is wrong ,”

. My employees are not going to feel secure.

Los Angeles Council Member Joe Buscaino said:

“What the measure does is hurts our tourism industry, which we heavily rely on, in a time when we are getting ready for the Olympics.”

He called it

“The dumbest measure I’ve seen in my 10-year tenure as a City Council member … It’s the worst of all options as it relates to solving homelessness in the city of LA.”

The Los Angeles City Council needs to reconsider this proposal as it does not address the problem of homelessness.
