An Ex-Bastion of Conservatism Sets Up Vending Machines To Keep Drug Addicts from Dying

If you plan to visit San Diego’s vending machines in the coming year, make sure that it is the correct type. You could end up in an overdose prevention station.

As relayed by The San Diego Union-Tribune, SD County will install a dozen machines by next summer, all dispensing Naloxone.

From the National Institute on Drug Abuse

Naloxone is a medicine that rapidly reverses an opioid overdose. It acts as an opioid antagonist. It attaches to opioid receptors, and reverses or blocks other opioid effects. If someone’s breathing is hampered or disrupted by an opioid overdose, Naloxone will quickly return normal function to their lungs. You can use heroin, codeine and hydrocodone to quickly restore normal breathing if you have taken opioids.

The first machine will go at McAlister Institute South Bay Regional Recovery Center, Chula Vista. Other locations haven’t yet been named, but five more are planned by 2022’s end.

The drug, which is known as Narcan, will be available in nasal spray form. It can save lives if administered promptly.

A statement by Nicole Esposito last week in which she praised the product, and emphasized the need to have it,

“Naloxone is a proven life saver in overdose situations. The enhanced distribution of naloxone into the hands of community members is vital in saving lives that might otherwise be lost to overdose.”

That sounds great, but how do we get here? In a country where many people are dependent on drugs so much that death-defying treatments like Pepsi can be made available to them?

It seems that we have gotten to this point by not asking how we got there. Our society seems to be getting better at solving problems and becoming less adept at stopping them.

Do not make a mistake, the crisis is real:

The vending machines are part of a larger countywide effort to make 33,000 Narcan kits available by June 30, 2023.

The Union-Tribune reports the machines will distribute free Narcan to anyone over 18, and an online course will be required before use. A PIN number will allow an individual to authorize the machine after completion of this course.

Politically, San Diego County has been shifting. Per the Voice of San Diego, “For nearly 150 years, through two world wars and massive growth, [it] loved the Republican Party.”

In 2019, the Times of San Diego observed a new day:

[San Diego, California’s 2nd-largest, is in fact an independent, self-contained outpost.

An ocean to its west, an international frontier to the south and a forbidding mountainous desert to the east. The Marine Corps’ Camp Pendleton is to the north of San Diego. …

San Diego is currently undergoing a political transformation. For most of San Diego County’s history, the city has been conservative. The rural parts of the county are still that way. The city is now blue due to the political awakening among its Latino population and organizational efforts of unions as well as demographic and economic change.

The educational sector can see the impact left-wing leadership has on it. The San Diego Unified Schools District, which I recently covered, is currently training teachers in gender identity and neopronouns teaching.

From the official district instruction, as obtained by City Journal’s Christopher Rufo:

The Gender Binary social construct places “male” or “female”, as synonyms with “man” or “woman”, and dictates the actions of people who are assigned to those categories. The Gender Binary is a limited system that excludes or oppresses transgender, nonbinary, intersex and gender-nonconforming individuals.

The training includes three examples of questions that teachers must prepare to answer for students. One is

What does it taste like to be semen?

  • What might be the intent of the question?
  • What knowledge do they need to make healthy choices?
  • How could you make your response inclusive of all students?
  • How would you respond?

Regarding Narcan machines. Nicole Esposito notes that the goal is to get addicts trained and to have the nasal spray before they overdose. They’ll then be prepared for it when it happens.

And a lot more people will have to be prepared:

These efforts are made at a time of rising opioid-related overdoses.

County data show that 900 people in the region died from accidental opioid overdoses in 2021, a 55 percent increase from the previous year.
