Here Are The Dems Refusing To Endorse A Biden Run In 2024

UPDATE: This story has been updated to reflect a statement from Democratic Minnesota Rep. Angie Craig.

Top Democrats are losing faith in President Joe Biden’s chances of winning re-election in 2024 and stating they want a change in leadership, the Washington Examiner reported Thursday.

Nearly 54% of voters disapprove of Biden’s performance as president, data from a Rasmussen Reports poll showed. The 79-year-old president’s advanced age coupled with a stagnating economy and consistently negative polling is signaling to top Democratic representatives that it might be time to pump the brakes in 2024, the Washington Examiner reported.

Reps. Jerrold Nadler and Carolyn Maloney, who are running for the same seat in Manhattan due to redistricting, both declined to openly support a Biden 2024 run during a debate between the two incumbents, according to the Washington Examiner. According to the Washington Examiner, Nadler is the House Judiciary Committee’s chair while Maloney leads the House Oversight and Reform Committee.

When asked whether he would support Biden’s reelection effort, Nadler responded that it was “too early to say” whether Biden would even mount another campaign, according to the New York Post. Maloney, who later recanted her skepticism, said she did not believe Biden was “running for reelection.”

The two powerful chairs are the latest in a stream of Democrats attempting to distance themselves from Biden, according to Politico.

Democratic Minnesota Rep. Dean Phillips said the party “would be well served by a new generation of compelling, well-prepared, dynamic Democrats to step up,” during a radio interview with WCCO. Phillips did not support the Biden campaign for reelection.

His opponent, Democratic Rep. Angie Craig agreed to Philips’s statement at a campaign event, when she was asked by MinnPost if she would vote for Biden. “Many Minnesotans are ready for a new generation in the Democratic Party. I will do everything to help those new leaders down and up the ballot,” Angie Craig stated in a statement that her office gave to the Daily Caller News Foundation. Craig stated that she is proud of the bipartisan efforts made in Congress with President Biden in order to reduce costs, preserve women’s reproductive rights, keep communities safe and to protect them. She also said that it was a great honor to continue working with any person who can help to get results in Minnesota’s Second district . “I believe we have to find new leaders up and down Washington in the Democratic Party.” Craig added. Democratic Senator Joe Manchin from West Virginia repeatedly refused support for a second-reelection bid of the President. Manchin told former CNN anchor Chris Cuomo, “we will have to wait and see.” (RELATED: ‘I Don’t Want To Answer That Question’: Visibly Uncomfortable Rep Cori Bush Refuses To Say If Biden Should Run In 2024)

Sen. Raphael Warnock of Georgia has sought to distance himself while on the campaign trail by crediting bipartisanship, instead of Biden’s leadership, for the key legislative wins of the session, according to the Associated Press.

Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio Cortez avoided committing to supporting a second Biden-run, during an interview in June with CNN’s Dana Bash on “State of the Union.” Ocasio-Cortez said Democrats should “cross that bridge when we get to it.”
