Florida Gov. DeSantis suspends ‘woke’ Tampa prosecutor

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis announced Thursday that he will suspend Tampa’s “woken” State Attorney Andrew Warren because he “refused to enforce Florida law,” which includes abortion law. He also said Warren was responsible for soft-on crime policies that made the community more unsafe.

Referring Florida’s recent ban on abortion at 15 week, Mr. DeSantis stated that the prosecutor should not “put himself above this and claim that he will not enforce the laws .”

.”

Mr. Warren is a progressive Democrat and won his seat as 2016 in 2016 after campaigning for criminal justice reform. He has been increasingly hostile to Republican state leaders. In the wake of Roe v. Wade’s June Supreme Court decision, Warren announced that he will not enforce abortion restrictions.

The governor claimed Mr. Warren had overstepped his authority.

” The constitution of Florida has given the Governor the power to veto. This means that if you violate your oath, or elevate yourself over the law, the Governor said in a press conference. You have failed to fulfill your duties, and are showing a deficiency to carry out those duties. Therefore, today we suspend Andrew Warren as state attorney .”

Mr. DeSantis stated that he would be replacing Mr. Warren by Susan Lopez, who is a judge at the Hillsborough County Court.

A spokesperson for Mr. Warren didn’t immediately reply to our request for comment.

On Hillsborough County’s State Attorney’s Website, Warren stated that he would “make Hillsborough County safe while promoting justice, fairness, and for all.” He also offered alternatives to jail time for juvenile and non-violent offenders.

Although Mr. Warren has been elected two times, Mr. DeSantis stated that he was legally allowed to suspend Mr. Warren under the state constitution.

” His conduct has been below what’s required by the Florida Constitution,” Mr. DeSantis stated. “When you say you won’t enforce laws that you don’t agree with, it’s an act of neglect that, quite simply, constitutes incompetence according to Florida law.” Florida court have made it clear that refusing to enforce the law is a violation of your duty .

Christine Pushaw, DeSantis spokesperson on Twitter described Warren as a progressive prosecutor that was “backed by George Soros,” who is a liberal megadonor who has invested money in electing liberal prosecutors to implement a progressive criminal justice system.

“They treat victims with contempt and criminals with respect,” Ms. Pushaw stated. This is the reason crime is on the rise. This is what Governor Ron DeSantis will not stand for. The one in Florida .”

was just suspended.

Mr. DeSantis’ announcement is coming amid rising discontent at progressive prosecutors, who have softened treatment of criminals in areas now plagued with higher crime rates.

In June, San Francisco voters recall District Attorney Chesa Bodin, a Liberal whose policies were blamed by rising crime, drug abuse, and homelessness.

In Los Angeles, liberal District Attorney George Gascon is facing a recall after opponents collected more than 700,000 signatures to put the question on the November ballot.

Mr. Warren pledged, along with Mr. Gascon, to promote criminal justice reforms and not tough-on crime policies.

He won defeat against Republican Mark Ober in 2016, promising to lower the number juveniles being charged as adults and reduce death penalty cases, and to create a task force to reverse wrongful convictions.

Mr. Warren rejected the state’s abortion law and said he wouldn’t enforce any bans on transgender treatment for children, if they are enacted by the legislature in the future.

Mr. DeSantis decried transgender treatment for children and called them child abuse.

” I don’t believe that Hillsborough County residents want an agenda where certain laws should not be enforced. Mr. DeSantis stated that. I don’t believe there are many who think that this is compatible with the rule of .”
