Buyers? Sellers? Marlins uncertain as trade deadline approaches

MIAMI (AP), — It’s possible that the Miami Marlins are sellers. It is possible they are buyers. They don’t know.

Kim Ng,

Marlins general manger, said Saturday night she had been calling and making calls ahead of Major League Baseball’s deadline for trades, but no decisions – whether to acquire players or send them out – are currently pending.

“Listen. I don’t think we can make a huge deal. It must be about the value coming back. It must be about tomorrow as well as the present. It’s impossible to say there is anything immediate at the moment .”

The trade deadline is Tuesday. Right-hander Pablo Lopez will be Miami’s starter against the New York Mets on Sunday. Lopez has been the topic of trade rumors.

Ng stated clearly that the Marlins don’t shop Lopez. She also stated that everyone is being heard by the Marlins.

” I believe a deal that truly helps us must present itself,” Ng stated. We’re not looking to move Pablo. As I have said, we are listening to all sides. We have to make the club more .”

The Marlins haven’t been in the top ten since August. 16, 2020. Except for a handful of April days, the Marlins haven’t been in first place during a regular 162-game seasons since June 2014..

Unless there’s a late-season rally, this season will mark the 12th time in the last 13 years where the Marlins finish with a losing record. The exception was 2020, the pandemic-shortened season, when Miami went 31-29 and made the expanded playoffs.

And with a 12-team playoff this year – three wild cards are coming from both the AL and NL – the Marlins aren’t exactly out of the race. Six games separated them from the third NL wild card spot on Saturday. FanGraphs, an analytics website, calculated their playoff chances at 1.7%.

” “I believe there’s an out shot, a very out shot,” Ng stated.

Added Marlins Manager Don Mattingly said: “It’s something we talk about often. It is realistic. It’s doable. It’s possible. All this stuff is possible .”

The Marlins must get well if they have any chance.

They started Saturday with 18 injured players. And of the 11 players who have more than 200 plate appearances for the team this season, five are currently sidelined, a list that includes Garret Cooper, Jorge Soler, All-Star Jazz Chisholm, Jon Berti and Brian Anderson.

All the players missing only makes it harder to decide whether you want to sell or buy right now.

” “It makes it so complicated,” Ng stated. “The first month of the season, we were 12-8. That was an excellent indicator of the potential of this team. In May, we took a huge hit. That was an awful month. We’ve been doing well since. It was that one month of bad luck that set us back, and since .”

we have been trying to get our heads together.

Mattingly stated that he is still hopeful of Miami making it to the playoffs with a strong stretch in late season.

” We’re capable to put some wins together. Mattingly stated that we have shown this. If we get really hot, that’s how the past couple months have been about. That mindset is what we need to keep at it .”
