Vice president Kamala Harris said Monday to the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People that “encouragement” is given to black family members to encourage their white friends to post pictures of themselves in order to increase the value of their homes during an appraisal.
“We hear of cases where a family of blacks is trying to sell their house. They get an appraisal, but they know that it does not reflect the real value of the home. Harris stated in his speech. Black families claimed that companies were under-appraising their homes in violation of the Fair Housing Act, The New York Times reported in August 2020. Abena Horton, whose website describes her as an “anti-discrimination change agent,” claimed that the value of her home changed by $165,000 after an experiment that included removing family photos from the mantle and having her husband, who is white, stay home alone, according to the Times.
The National Association of Realtors didn’t immediately reply to a Daily Caller News Foundation inquiry about whether these incidents took place.
