JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind.–Police are investigating after more than 30 bodies, some decomposing, were found inside a southern Indiana funeral home.

Police in the Louisville suburb of Jeffersonville responded to Lankford Funeral Home and Family Center on Friday evening and found 31 bodies, including some “in the advanced stages of decomposition,” Maj. Isaac Parker said.

He stated that the local coroner had noticed a strong smell coming from the building. Parker stated that officers in hazmat gear discovered bodies inside. Some bodies were found at the funeral home from March. Police also found the cremated remains of 16 people.

” “It was an unpleasant scene,” Parker stated. “The conditions weren’t good .”

The owner of the funeral home spoke with police on Friday and an investigation continues.

The owner didn’t immediately reply to the email sent by the Associated Press Sunday asking for comment.

The remains were brought to the Clark County Coroner’s Office to be identified. Police asked for any information from anyone to call the coroner’s offices.

A woman who had sent the body of her brother to the funeral home after he passed away in April said that she still has not received his remains. Tara Owen stated that when she contacted the funeral director, the man replied that he was “dealing a lot at this time .”
